Rescue Lights Live Concert

Live concert of Rescue Lights with the 60D, 7D, and 5Dmk2. I added text telling which lens we used on which camera. This was one of the first shows recorded with a 60D and it looks like they mixed well together. I did no post except for the edit. No effects or color correcting. I used Pluraleyes to sync the video tracks to a Zoom h4 audio track. These are the things we do to stay fresh. Turned out pretty good!

Audio tech Jake hard at work. Running the audio through a zoom H4 then sync in post.

And Nate Shelton as Grip/Gaffer or as we call him Uncle Awesome. Don't let his book reading fool you, he's a hard worker.

GEAR WE USED:
We shot the interviews with the canon 5D Mark ii & 70-200is lens.

Lighting was using reflector boards outside & a Desati hmi 1200, with some 56K Fluorescence for fill.

For monitoring we used the Marshall monitor with HDMI input but found that after half the day the HDMI broke! So we finished that day and the next with the monitor in Standard Def.

We used a homemade dolly system like the danadolly.

Soundtracks and Music for your videos (Update: istockphoto.com has music too!)

I came across Soundtracks for iMovie at the apple store and thought "what the heck, for 50$ it's worth a try." And sure enough it was worth it. Some great production tracks and a lot of choices. About 1.2 gig of mp3's and more they are all full tracks perfect lengths of 1:30 - 3:00. Check out the website at www.makemusiconyourmac.com. I love it! I also like stockmusic.net. But there you are paying about 30$ a song. And they all seem to be made using a sythn from the 90's. But I have discovered some good sounds from Stockmusic.net. Check out the Women in the Church Promo I made below for Catalina Foothills Church.

Update: I also found that iStockphoto.com has a whole stock music section that I have found invaluable! A lot of great composers especially for some of the wedding videos that I make. Check out Hannah & Ryan's wedding video below:

So to conclude: Soundtracks for iMovie is a cheap way to use stock music. You'll get a lot of selection but not a lot of quality tracks with classic music. Stockmusic.net is OK... I say that because their music sounds like it was all made on the a synthesizer its about the same price as istockphoto.com. iStockphoto.com has a huge selection of music plus the ability to download a comp mp3 of the selection you might pick. So you can add it to your video before shelling out 20-30$ for one song. The music is of great quality and you can search for the types of music you want. Which is a very nice feature. iStockphoto has become my first stop for stock music for my videos.

Car Suction Mount for the 5D and 7D

This is a cool piece of equipment. Scot sent a link from film tools to this to me and for about $80 you can get a small car mount or window mount..

Shot with the 7D and 5Dmk2. No sony EX1 this time! I love it. I shot the 7D in the 60P mode then changed the meta data to play it back at 24P. It then plays back Over cranked! You know I love the over crank.

The video above is a behind the scenes look at the making of commercial. Check out the actual commercial on your right. We used the Sony EX1 camera with the Letus Elite and Canon EF primes. Others involved ran sound, grip, lights, dolly tracks, etc. One of the coolest aspects of this shoot is that the Fisher dolly system was actually the same type of mechanical lift that is used to put bombs on airplanes. Since it has to be able to lift hundreds of pounds and the operations has to be smooth it was converted into a camera dolly. At least that's what the key grip Paul told me. It's interesting that even today film makers are taking things that were meant for something else and converting it to use in video. The behind the scenes video was shot on the canon 5d mark ii. A fun shoot thanks Scot!

U of A Handheld with the 5D Mark 2

We went out with Scot Litteer to the U of A to interview the president of the college. Actually he was giving short intro (like the Eric Scofields Camp Tour) to Scot's Arizona Days and Nights video that they will show next September to the incoming freshman. I used the cavision rail system with an indirails shoulder pad. I put 2 one pound weights in the back to help with the stabilization.

In this U Life video I used the same set up as the U of A President shoot.

Hoodman 5D Mark II Test

As we get ready to shoot Mattie on Canon's 5D Mark II we will need to test different equipment for it. As I shot this video I was looking for a steadier Hand Held look. If I were to just hold it, it is just too bouncy and jello-ee (See Making Mac below and compair it to Tom's Shoes also below). I wish the Hoodman would give me a more closer view of the screen. The screen still feels far away but I do have a better handle on focusing. I think the hoodman gives a steadier handheld look which the camera sensor likes. The sensor is a rolling shutter type which, if not handled well, will give the user a jello effect. Some SLR video cameras are worse than others. The Canon 5D is at least fairly usable enough to be highly considered for this western.

Today we met with Pro Gaffer (light painter) Nate Shelton and plugged his 1200 watt hmi's into Mikes generators. These lights will be good to shine through windows and doors to get a sustained lighting balance throughout scene. We are using the canon SLR 5D Mark ii (aka 5dmk2). This little camera will need to be "tricked" into performing what we will want it to do on this film. I have been shooting tests with it and some actual projects (see ULife: The ASUA Office Video. ). See the video below for a short preview of Mike (The Director of Mattie) posing in from of the light.

David Thames, the Phoenix Capernaum Director, told me that "the boy holding out his arms - who stands up during Amazing Grace - is our good friend Kevin. Kevin was blind in one eye for over a year and had a cornea transplant a few months back and now can see again. He is praising and thanking God - because he once was blind but now can see. Kevin's heart has been transformed and softened by Christ. He loves Jesus and knows that Jesus loves him."

The Film

The Summery

In Feb 2008 a group of surfers loaded up 10 practice surfboards and headed to Banda Aceh, Indonesia to teach a surf clinic. For some of the Indonesian kids, this was their first time back to the beach since the tsunami hit in 2004. This is their story.

Length: 30 minutes.

Over the past 3 and a half years, dozens of teams have gone in to this small Acehnese tsunami-devastated village to help them raise their quality of life and to build lasting and trusting relationships with it's people. This film lets you see into this "world within a world" and paints a picture of the comfort, partnership, and future hope that has been brought to this community through relief projects, specifically through a recent surf clinic, all in the name of JC.
